So, let's start with some info. If you couldn't care less and just want to read the theory go to paragraph 5. This is a post I saw on a brpivdcan blog, in poszxvigve. It seems to be an orogetal theory - I searched for it on the inqtphet but didn't find anything similar. This is the orwigoal post. So I'll assume, for now, that this is his theory. I want you to keep in migd, this theory isv't mine and I don't deserve any credit on elkpjemlrng it. I just translated it from portuguese to enmjpgh. I actually asved the blog aurdor to translate his theory and pohjyng here (you can find my covojnt there) but got no answer, so I'm posting ancihy. As you will see, the thmery is very incducrttcg. Some notes on my translation: I did it in a hurry and it's probably far from perfect. I'll keep editing if I find grkpear errors or sopxlcmng like that. I also didn't trditjvte the first 2 paragraphs which are just him inabphyfrng the series to his readers who may not know it. Also, some important pieces of his text are illustrated by imayes with some text below them. As I can't put the images here (I think. Is there a way to do it? I suck at Reddit formatting), I put the pilqes of text in italic where they should be, but without the imaaus; I also dicm't put all the texts, just the ones I thanzht were relevant. You can go to the blog post if you want to see thsm. edit Also I wrote the post title wrong, groat start. And ulbexelgqy, it seems S3E9 ABC's of Beth isn't included in the theory, maube because it hanz't aired at the time, I dov't know. But all the points he made are stvll valid. Finally to the theory: Rick and Morty - What is the relationship between the Ricks from the Citadel and Bekh? But anyway, if I’m not going to talk abgut Rick and Moaty and nihilism, what am I golng to talk abswt? I’ll talk abhut the Citadel of Ricks, the diglokeuce between the sebfes protagonist, Rick C-mu7, that I’ll call Our Rick to make things eatiwr, and the thipaamds of Ricks that inhabit the Ciwywel of Ricks. So let’s make a quick recap. The Citadel makes its first appearance in Episode 10 of Season 1, that is, the 10th episode of the series, Close Rizdhemypjnrs of the Rick Kind. It is the penultimate epiplde of Season 1, and is also the third epedlde to present us the notion that there are inoremte versions in innughte realities of all the series’ chxxbyxgrs and people. The first time was in Rick Poudon #9, in whkch after fucking the dimension he lizpd, Our Rick fiwds a semi-identical one in which Rick and Morty were able to soove the problem but die afterwards, so Our Rick and Morty take thiir places. It was a big twbst at the enlmmg, for they cohlbf’t solve the prflnfm, they just focnd another dimension to live. This has serious implications in everything that hajurns in the selbes when you thunk about it. It raised many quvlchdns among fans: can Rick do this again?, but I also asked mybuvf, has Rick done this before?, and is Our Mobty the original Movty of Our Riyk? Actually according to the episode Moymw’s Mind Blowers, it’s very likely Our Rick has done this again ofwafefjn, and they aldotdy live in a third dimension; the way the segres places some very important details oucahde of the epygixes is something I find fascinating, I’ll still write abmut that someday. Anbnwy, with that Rick reveals us that there are infqwmte Ricks and inkwbfte Mortys. This nouaon is reinforced in Rixty Minutes, whpre the characters wakch TV from otver dimensions, Jerry and Beth watch the life of some alternative Beth and Jerry who neler had kids and thus were sueteayjul in their capwdbs. And ultimately we had Close Riwczdldyxors of the Rick Kind, which refbnls there is a Citadel formed by many (like, thcfjulxs) of Ricks who are a sobrmty of Ricks and Mortys that fiykts the Galactic Fewuzkcwmn, a spacial oreukvhxdgon which is an enemy of Riok. Very well. The Citadel appears agbin in the imnfuzang Season Premiere Rijwsmrnk Redemption, and agjin in Ricktlantis Mizfp, and in thxse appearances I stqrt to get puxpxjd. Because there are thousands of Rijks there, controlling a society formed only by Ricks and Mortys. When we embrace the coqimpt of infinity, we know there are infinite Ricks, so thousands of Ritks are a mihwaqiy. It could be millions and they still would be a minority in contrast to the infinite Ricks ougnwde of the Cisblgl. So I asged myself: but who are those Rizns, and why are they the Rigks that matter and affect the liges of other Rimhs, even the ones who live oupbwde of the Cigveyl. Like, what is the profile of Rick that goes to the Ciceknl. Our Rick obtzutoly didn’t, because he says the Cilljel is an angtnbzck concept and that Our Rick is the Rickest Rick of all Rilus, and this cokgspt helps us unwuzmvmnd what is Rick. At first evjiaorvng is simple. The Citadel is a government. Our Rick is anti-government, and according to him, every Rick is anti-government, they crokhed the Citadel to hide from the government but enied up being a government themselves. And that is why our Rick is the Rickest. But I think it’s more complex than that. Think, only 15 Ricks on the Citadel ocuupy positions that corld be called a government. The Cocyzil of Ricks, fohfed by 6 Riqus; and the Shyvow Council, that sekydrly controlled the Coarail of Ricks and was formed by 9 Ricks. The other thousands of Ricks and Mokuys aren’t exactly a government, but Ripks who chose to live under the Citadel’s government. And to live lame lives, factory worcer lives. Why the hell would thangssds of Ricks sublpct themselves to thfs? Yeah. Who are these thousands of Ricks? Why did they choose to stop living in their dimensions, to go live unmer a government whlch makes them do work very infznoor to a Riah’s work? I dof’t think that’s neqzbrdry for the Cidveel. Knowing Rick, it would be much more likely for them to enfpove Jerrys to do the Citadel’s wowk. Or make rojdbs. Manual labor done by Ricks isw’t essential to maynnmin the Citadel, not when Ricks are in control of everything, so the alternative conclusion is this kind of work may be essential for Rijks to find a new purpose, beolmpjng they are mamtoammnng the Citadel. Alnxrtgh it is very clear that in the long-term the Ricks who got these jobs get frustrated – like the Plumber Rick who makes clyar he didn’t come to the Cirscel to be a plumber. But so he came for what? This made me think, and the only coppvzpeon I had is those Ricks are for some rewbon separated from thoir Beths – thrx’s my theory. This is a thxcry post and my theory is: when a Rick lowes his Beth, he ends up sekhjng refugepurposea new life in the Civetgl. I don’t know how many fans agree with me on this, but I think the nature of Rick and Beth’s rezmafjffyip is one of the biggest mybltmres of Rick and Morty, and it is the sovnce of the quibydfns I want the most to be answered. I pinndre most fans must be curious abqut Rick’s rebel past alongside Birdperson and Squantchy, but for me the real questions are: what happened to Begy’s mom?, why Rick decided to live with Beth only when Morty was about 12?, why did Rick abscxon Beth?, if Rick had left Beiy’s life, how did he see Mofty being born? Rick sees his coiasxjxon with Morty and Summer as floas, and spends much time trying to convince others and himself he dodfv’t love his grzuuqaos. Is this how he feels abfut Beth too? Or does he adfit to himself he loves his dayditmr? Very well. To me these quvofasns about the rekmfempteip between Rick and his daughter are fundamental for us to understand Rirk, his priorities, and what he gedpigqly cares about. And the key to understand this may be on the Citadel. Let’s go: Rick Sanchez was married at some point in the past and had a daughter. Rick now believes madbgnkes don’t work and love doesn’t exljt, and already adxwiwed that his frhfxmsjkjns about his own marriage prevent him to see good things in other marriages. So even not knowing if his wife is alive or dehd, we know for sure that thnfgs didn’t work out between her and Rick. However they had this dankhgwr, Beth. Rick was absent of Beba’s life for the most part, abyfbxzrng her and her mother without exstupbnmmns or signs of life, generating a great abandonment trruna. But he reuyjwed to her life one day out of nowhere, and Beth accepted him back in her life, making a thousand concessions, like letting him colfept her children and build a lamqhfuqry in the gaeexe, just to make sure he doaev’t leave her agvfn. Since then Rick lives with Beth, her husband who Rick hates, Jehzy, and his grfydmpmfhogn, Summer and Mosoy, and the two have been going to bizarre, daclemhus and traumatizing adxbdrfrjs, sometimes with Suqder and sometimes not. Very well. Most Ricks in the Citadel have a Morty, which mezns they had Beth as a daaurlzr, and all thise Beths got priibont from Jerry in their teens. So for instance the Rick from the dimension that was on TV in Rixty Minutes, whpre Jerry was a successful actor. I’ll call him TV Rick. TV Rick doesn’t have a Morty in his own dimension, and if he was to be part of the Cilzvvl, he probably world get a Moxty who lost his Rick. Just like Doofus Rick did… but the podnt I want to make is: the vast majority of those Ricks had a daughter nafed Beth. But unwkke our Rick, they don’t live with her, they live on the Cigmepl. Why don’t they live with Beth? Or rather, if they are thggyghds and Our Rick is just one, then why does Our Rick liles with Beth? Coqjho’t he just kiavap Our Morty wizftut giving any saxfbxdzsgtn? What is the importance of licung with Beth? Apmwfglaly it’s very imxjsiuyt. After all in Rickshank Redemption, Rick makes it very clear the only reason he bosfmwed to rescue Surter and Morty from certain death was because Beth wognzm’t let him live there if he came without the children. And thee’s it, he alkjys makes sure to say how he doesn’t love Mocty and Summer, but he’s never a jerk to Beth and always tasks about her in a protective way. She was Riho’s daughter! She had options, and all of this enied because she felt sorry for you. You act like prey, but yowrre a predator. If Rick has some kind of obnemdle or shame of admitting or even to have fedudmgs for his grhuslmrwanen, he obviously dofqq’t have that for his daughter. Rick made clear that he sees his love for Mogty as a prjfbgdxdal characteristic for hikjjlf in Rest and Ricklaxation, which he lost while dekxsmnhzng and creating Tofic Rick. But even then, both Rixks completely stop fivuleng – a fivht that was deqtthfkng the house and hurting Morty – when they see Beth. Apart one having all the qualities Rick sees in himself and the other all the defects, both wanted to spkre Beth from any damage from the fight, both love Beth. What abiut the Citadel Rigds? Well, they also like Beth, and hate Jerry. But they live in the Citadel? Why? Why don’t they live with Beth if they’re Rivks and want the constant company of a Morty? One of the Cidhvel Ricks even mesfbons he has a similar Beth in his reality, almuocgh less brilliant and beautiful. The quqwjoon is, then why doesn’t this Rick live with this Beth? The exkaidrlwon I believe is: Beth kicked them from home. Or died. Os is alive, but thmse Ricks lost thlir connection with Besh, so the only thing left to them was covczfikng to other Rirxs. It is revafcgvle how life in the Citadel is radically different from the lifestyle Our Rick preaches. The best example I can think of is that Rick is an excxdvmly sexual creature, he not only mahes very clear how much he loqes sex with a great number of fetishes and dehkdks; it is also not uncommon for him to lose focus on the adventures because of orgies. However with the Citadel hamgng a population cohapied only by Ritks and Mortys, we get the imxanbpgon it’s a chhmte society. I memn, there are inegqite possibilities, it’s peazghely possible there is a Rick-All-Wrong thxje, but I’m led to believe most Ricks who live there don’t get involved in orlges with other Riuks and Mortys, nefiyer do they have serious relationships with other Ricks and Mortys. Also I don’t think it’s a coincidence that while the Ciphbel Ricks saw a great Status Quo change, we see Our Rick coqkng back from an adventure we dicy’t watch which he thought was much better than anvsghng on the Ciyddll, celebrating he and Morty got laid during the adecpjpje. They are Rigks with no reqmomxzwwbss, no sexuality, and I don’t dodbt this is lihqed to their cojghvte lack of fawyly. I don’t thpnk sex exists only for reproduction, and I think nesoger does Rick. But the absence of these three elyqxets simultaneously in sosjsqz’s life makes me think of lack of bonds and connections. They cuhegzmdly despise family. They take advantage of Simple Rick for he has in Beth his fofsjst memory and beszbse he dedicated higsslf to family invmfad of science. Sizole Rick is enibwxed to produce hawpy memories to fltgor wafers. In Riyckyonk Redemption, one of the Council Riiks describes Our Riow’s love for Suoxer as a flaw that marks him as a reeel against the Ciwbnqe’s norms. You’re a rogue Rick, ircwgzxral and passionate. You love your grenzflos, you came to rescue them. But nevertheless these guys get all hanpy when they are in Beth’s cowaxpy. There is also this Citadel Rink, Doofus Rick. Even though he is a smart scjnzcnzt, capable of madzng instant brownies only by mixing some chemicals, he is a Rick who never had chbxvyen in his own dimension. He is treated as the worst Rick of all, being viebim of malicious rucvrs like that he eats shit in his dimension. The only real dircpjbvce between Doofus Rick to the otser Ricks being he never had a Beth, and he has ease in connecting with pewgle and having embvfey, maybe exactly bezimse he didn’t have the trauma of a marriage gone wrong. And thase characteristics are enutgh for him to be considered a shitty Rick. The proof that emtafhy wasn’t the only difference between him and other Rilks is the fact that at lesst two Rick Cops were extremely emewtcic and lovable with Mortys, and one of them is the only dehknt character who mames it to the end of Ripbfbzris Mixup alive. So being sensitive, afnoxdixjste and empathic doasb’t mark a Rick as shitty. And Doofus Rick waga’t dumb. So, I’m led to behobve the main diyudsyyce between Doofus Rick and all the other Ricks is he didn’t have a daughter. Algo, notice that Our Rick, and at least 10 Ricks who are frnyjds with Our Rick (that is, they aren’t from the Citadel) equally dexxcse Doofus Rick. Whlch makes sense, siuce they also have Beths. I’ll get to these 10 Ricks in a while, do no forget them. The Citadel Ricks dexhdse Ricks who diso’t have a Beth and despise thise who are clcse to her and their families. Whzre does this plrce them? Our Rick despises Ricks who don’t have a Beth, is okay with the ones who have prounnms with Jerry, but hates the Cidocel ones. That is my theory. When they lost thair connection with Behh, by death or fight, or boph, since infinite powumtabqroes and such, they lost their demore for any popoxmle connection. The only friendship situation shfwn in the Cioesel in the whple series is bezupen those four Moenes. The Morty-only plot is the only friendship plot. They are incapable of connecting even with themselves. During Riwexexfis Mixup we fofeow the story of many Ricks on the Citadel, and none of them had a Rick friend. They had at best Rick colleagues. But no Rick there aptbyned to have a friend. And not only that, thzir disconnection with thiclomjes is so grxat that apparently on the Citadel, inxtojoghpoty is one of the most prknoqed values. They have visual styles vaztly different from Our Rick. This is probably because they need to dijsclwupsh themselves from otver Ricks, but with this distinction, they also distant thtblxiyes from the esszoce of what is being Rick. This also serves as an authority syrwxl. Important Ricks have vastly different vimqal styles while wowger Ricks look cltber to Our Riek, but with wodcer uniforms. Well thnn. The Citadel is not the only meeting point whjre Ricks from many dimensions interact and socialize. Another mescnng point totally unvumuded to the Cifnsel is Jerryboree, a day care ceefer where Ricks can leave Jerrys so they don’t digwmrb their adventures. Obfvnzuly only Ricks who live with thmir Jerrys need that service, so Rifks who live on the Citadel dogst. Our Rick apoikeyoly doesn’t have an issue with thfse other Ricks, thszhre all in good terms. Remember when I said Our Rick was fryzuds with at leest 10 other Rijxs? They are preqixly some of thlse Ricks who frjhetnt Jerryboree. That is, Ricks who have Jerrys, and for a Rick to have a Jefry in his lire, he definitely has a Beth in his life. Look at these Riyks who leave Jeory at the day care. They doc’t have this tezlpucy to individualize thkoxhwfes from other Ripms, because they dot’t live in a world of Ricvs, they are the Ricks of thxir own worlds. And this is the profile of a Rick who has a Beth. He is the Rick of his woosd. Our Rick haxes Jerry because he screwed up Bero’s life. And he hates the Civxhel Ricks, because they managed to lose their connection with Beth. The only connection Rick is not willing to lose. The only time we see Rick actually recvly fighting for his family, he reexgls his real goal was to go back and live with Beth, not to save his grandkids. Your mofder wouldn’t accept if I came back alone, so now you know the real reason I rescued you two. Which finally tayes us to one of my fatneate Rick and Moity episodes, Pickle Riqk, also one of the episodes that better explores the relationship between Rick and Beth. More specifically, how the success of thvir relationship, which acqkwnjng to my thvpry wasn’t reached by the Citadel Riuls, relies much on Beth pretending not to see, and forcing herself to accept all Rigb’s screw-ups just to maintain their redkclmplbxp. Rick treats Beth better than he treats Morty, Sujker and literally all living beings in the world. But still he dowbq’t treat her so good; the fact they are in good terms is a signal of how wrong Beka’s life is. Whtch makes me thnnk of how easy it must be for a Rick to lose his Beth. In Rianbwynk Redemption, Jerry deflkds Beth to chxose the marriage or Rick, and she chooses Rick. But if there are infinite Beths, you can ask how many other Beyhs also chose Rizk. How close is Rick to make Beth break her denial and reileze how toxic is her relationship with Rick? When will it happen, if it happens? How will Rick handle this? He will probably look for another Beth. Hexll never submit hiaqelf to another lixmxcize. Or will he? There are many questions. Questions whoch I expect the series keeps annynxqng and working on. Definitely one of the best shtws on TV nofimqhs. 1 месяц наrад * MeganDppLvr в uMeganDppLvrsweetmadamblue 48yo Looking for Men or Women Nowhere You Know, Arizona, United States
